Asphalt Volume Calculator

Calculating asphalt volume is the foundational step in sizing excavation cuts, determining subgrade aggregate fills, and coordinating dump truck fleets. While hot-mix asphalt is ultimately purchased by weight at the asphalt plant, measuring spatial volume in cubic yards or cubic meters ensures your site prep matches actual pavement requirements.

Volume Dimensions

Calculated Volume & Weight

Enter length, width, and thickness to calculate volume in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters with total material weight.
Cubic Yards / Cubic Meters
--cu yd
Equal to -- cu ft  ( -- m³ )
Equivalent Asphalt Weight
--short tons
Total pounds: -- lb ( -- tonnes )
1 cu yd = 27 cu ft = 0.7646 m³

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter length and width dimensions. Input the boundary dimensions of your paved area using feet or meters. For non-uniform shapes, split the area into sections or determine the total area first with our asphalt area calculator.
  2. Specify compacted thickness. Enter your planned final layer thickness in inches or millimeters (commonly 2 to 3 inches for driveways and 3 to 5 inches for heavy-duty lots).
  3. Set a waste and leveling factor. Apply an allowance between 5% and 10% to account for base grade irregularities and edge compaction roll-off.
  4. Review cubic measurements and weight conversions. Instantly examine required volume in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters alongside converted weight in short tons or metric tonnes.

Formulas

Volumetric asphalt calculations begin by expressing length, width, and layer thickness in consistent units to determine cubic feet:

Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Thickness (in) / 12)

Because material hauling and site excavation are conventionally priced per cubic yard, cubic feet are converted by dividing by 27:

Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) / 27

In the metric system, volume is calculated directly in cubic meters:

Volume (m³) = Length (m) × Width (m) × (Thickness (mm) / 1000)

To bridge volume and plant purchase weight, standard hot-mix asphalt features a compacted density of 145 lb/cu ft (2,323 kg/m³). This establishes a handy rule of thumb: 1 cubic yard of compacted asphalt weighs approximately 3,915 lb (1.958 short tons, or nearly 2 tons).

Worked Example

Example 1: Suburban Residential Driveway

A standard two-car driveway measuring 45 ft long by 18 ft wide paved with a 2-inch compacted asphalt lift.

  • Surface area: 45 × 18 = 810 sq ft.
  • Cubic volume: 810 × (2 / 12) = 135.0 cu ft.
  • Cubic yards: 135 / 27 = 5.00 cu yd.
  • With 5% waste factor: 5.25 cu yd (approx. 10.28 short tons).

Example 2: Commercial Loading Apron

A warehouse delivery apron measuring 60 ft by 40 ft built for heavy trucks with a 4-inch compacted base lift.

  • Surface area: 60 × 40 = 2,400 sq ft.
  • Cubic volume: 2,400 × (4 / 12) = 800.0 cu ft.
  • Cubic yards: 800 / 27 = 29.63 cu yd.
  • Weight equivalent: 29.63 × 1.9575 = 58.00 short tons (without waste).

Example 3: Metric Community Walkway

A pedestrian park walkway measuring 50 meters in length, 2.5 meters in width, with a 60 mm asphalt surface.

  • Surface area: 50 × 2.5 = 125.0 m².
  • Metric volume: 125 × (60 / 1000) = 7.50 m³.
  • With 5% contingency: 7.88 m³.
  • Metric weight: 7.88 × 2.323 = 18.30 metric tonnes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubic yards of asphalt are in one ton?

One short ton (2,000 lb) of standard compacted asphalt occupies approximately 0.511 cubic yards (13.79 cubic feet). As a practical rule of thumb, each cubic yard of asphalt weighs roughly 1.96 short tons.

Why do suppliers sell asphalt by the ton instead of by the cubic yard?

Hot-mix asphalt expands significantly when heated at the batch plant and contracts as it cools. Liquid asphalt binder also changes density with temperature. Weight measured on calibrated platform scales provides a consistent, transparent metric for purchasing.

How do I convert cubic yards of asphalt to short tons?

Multiply your cubic yards by 27 to obtain cubic feet, multiply by 145 lb/cu ft to find total pounds, and divide by 2,000. Alternatively, multiplying your cubic yard figure by 1.958 yields the equivalent short tonnage.

How many cubic yards can a standard dump truck deliver?

A standard tandem-axle dump truck generally carries 8 to 10 cubic yards of material (around 15 to 19 tons). Larger tri-axle and quad-axle trucks can haul 11 to 14 cubic yards (21 to 26 tons), subject to local road weight regulations.

What is the difference between loose volume and compacted volume?

When asphalt mix leaves the paver screed, it contains internal air voids that compress by roughly 20% to 25% under steel drum rolling. Calculations on this page refer to final in-place compacted volume.

How do I calculate volume for circular or non-rectangular areas?

Use our specialized asphalt area calculator to solve for circular cul-de-sacs, curved entryways, or multi-zone layouts, then apply the layer depth to find total cubic volume.
