Asphalt Paving FAQ
Everything you need to know about asphalt tonnage, layer thickness, base preparation, and ourasphalt calculator.
Asphalt Material & Quantity Estimating
How much area does one ton of asphalt cover?
At the standard compacted density of 145 lb/cu ft (2,323 kg/m³), one short ton (2,000 lb) covers approximately 80 to 83 square feet at a 2-inch compacted depth, or roughly 55 square feet at a 3-inch depth. Factoring in a recommended 5% safety margin for base irregularities, contractors plan on 78 to 80 square feet per ton for 2-inch driveway caps.
Why does the calculator use compacted density instead of loose density?
When hot mix leaves the asphalt plant, it contains loose internal air voids and sits at a density between 110 and 125 lb/cu ft. Under heavy steel drum rollers, the mix compresses by 20% to 25% to reach its final structural in-place density of 145 lb/cu ft. Because construction specs dictate the finished compacted thickness, calculating with compacted density ensures you order enough material to achieve that depth.
How much does a cubic yard of asphalt weigh?
One cubic yard of compacted dense-graded hot-mix asphalt weighs approximately 3,915 pounds, or roughly 1.96 short tons (nearly 2 tons). One cubic meter of compacted asphalt weighs approximately 2.32 metric tonnes.
How many tons of asphalt are needed for an average residential driveway?
A standard two-car residential driveway measuring 12 feet wide by 40 feet long (480 sq ft) with a 2.5-inch compacted thickness requires approximately 7.6 to 8.0 short tons of asphalt mix, including a 5% waste allowance.
Pavement Thickness & Subgrade Design
How thick should asphalt be for a residential driveway?
For standard passenger sedans, crossover SUVs, and light pickup trucks, 2.0 to 3.0 inches of compacted asphalt installed over a 6 to 8-inch compacted crushed stone base provides optimal service life. If you park motorhomes, large boats, or heavy utility trailers, increase the asphalt depth to 3.5 or 4.0 inches.
Why is crushed stone base preparation so critical for asphalt longevity?
Asphalt is a flexible pavement that derives its structural capacity from the foundation beneath it. A 6 to 8-inch layer of dense-graded crushed stone (such as 3/4-inch gravel with fines) distributes concentrated wheel loads across the subgrade soil and facilitates subsurface drainage to prevent frost heave and rutting.
Can asphalt be installed directly over dirt, grass, or clay?
No. Installing asphalt directly over topsoil, grass, or uncompacted clay will lead to rapid structural failure, pothole formation, and severe cracking. The organic topsoil must be excavated to stable subsoil and replaced with compacted aggregate stone.
What is the maximum thickness recommended for a single asphalt lift?
Hot-mix asphalt should never be placed thicker than 3 inches in a single pass. When a pavement profile calls for 4 inches or more, it must be paved in two separate lifts—a coarse binder course followed by a fine-textured surface course—so rollers can achieve complete internal compaction throughout the mat.
Costs, Deliveries & Haul Logistics
How much does hot-mix asphalt cost per ton?
Raw hot-mix asphalt typically ranges from $80 to $140 per ton at the asphalt plant, depending on petroleum binder prices, regional aggregate availability, and transport distance. Turnkey installation by a licensed paving contractor generally ranges from $3.00 to $7.00 per square foot for residential driveways and $2.50 to $5.50 per square foot for commercial lots.
How many tons of asphalt can a dump truck deliver?
A standard tandem-axle dump truck carries 14 to 16 short tons. A tri-axle truck hauls 18 to 22 tons, and a quad-axle or semi-trailer dump truck can haul 22 to 26+ tons, subject to state road and bridge weight limits.
How much waste allowance should I add to my asphalt order?
A safety margin of 5% to 10% is standard civil practice. This allowance compensates for minor dips and grading variations in the aggregate base, hand-raked edge joints, and unavoidable material loss during paver cleanout.
What is the difference between hot-mix asphalt (HMA) and cold patch?
Hot-mix asphalt is manufactured at 280°F to 320°F (138°C to 160°C), delivered hot, and compacted with heavy rollers to form a monolithic, long-lasting surface. Cold patch uses special emulsified binders that remain workable at ambient temperatures, intended only for temporary winter pothole patching and small repairs.
Installation, Curing & Long-Term Care
How long after paving can you drive on new asphalt?
You can generally walk on new asphalt within a few hours once it cools below 140°F (60°C). Passenger vehicles should stay off the fresh pavement for at least 48 to 72 hours, and up to 5 to 7 days during hot summer weather when the binder remains pliable.
How do I ensure proper water drainage to prevent puddle formation?
All asphalt surfaces must be graded with a continuous slope of at least 1% to 2% (a drop of approximately 1/4 inch per linear foot) directing stormwater runoff away from building foundations and toward roadside swales, ditches, or catch basins.
When should a new asphalt driveway be sealcoated?
Wait 6 to 12 months before applying the first coat of asphalt emulsion sealcoat. This allows light oils in the fresh hot-mix binder to evaporate and cure fully. Sealcoating too early can trap oils and soften the pavement.
How long does a properly installed asphalt driveway typically last?
With a properly compacted 6 to 8-inch aggregate base, adequate slope drainage, and regular sealcoating every 3 to 5 years, an asphalt driveway typically provides 20 to 30 years of reliable service.
